Gallbladder Disease

Gallbladder disease is a condition that is marked by some sort of ongoing damage to a patient’s gallbladder. Gallbladder disease usually encompasses two conditions – inflammation of the gallbladder and gallstones. The gallbladder is an organ that holds bile, which is produced by the liver. It helps the body digest fat. When it is diseased, it can be removed with little serious long-term damage to the patient, but gallbladder disease can cause a great deal of pain and suffering, and there can be complications. Gallstones are caused by a buildup of cholesterol in the gallbladder that can form a “stone” inside of it. Gallbladder inflammation has various causes.

Symptoms of Gallbladder Disease

Symptoms of gallbladder disease vary. When a patient’s gallbladder is inflamed, he or she is likely to experience symptoms such as pain in the upper right of the abdomen that can radiate to the shoulder or the back, tenderness over the painful area, sweating, nausea, general feelings of malaise, vomiting, fever, chills, and abdominal bloating. Symptoms are most likely to manifest after a meal, especially one that is high in fat content. Gallstones often do not come with any specific symptoms at first, but pain in the upper right of the abdomen can be a sign of gallstones. The pain can be mild or more severe. Gallstones also increase the chance of developing pancreatitis, or a swollen pancreas. Abdominal pain is often serious, and if the pain is severe a physician should be consulted right away.

Treatment

Treatment of gallbladder disease often involves removal of the gallbladder. Gallstones often do not need treatment if there is no pain or other complications associated with them. Sometimes doctors might suggest that the patient undergo surgery if there is a chance that they may begin to block the bile duct. If the gallstones do cause symptoms, a doctor may advise that a patient wait and see if the symptoms persist before taking further action, such as surgery. Surgery for gallstones usually includes the removal of the gallbladder altogether. Gallbladder inflammation usually involves a hospital stay and possibly removal of the gallbladder.
